New every morning

For those of us who can do early mornings, there is nothing more beautiful as seeing a sunrise.  For some reason there is something about the newness of a brand new day which brings hope and refreshing.

It was at this time of day that many of the heroes in the Bible sought God, and whilst this is not a hard and fast rule, it is certainly a good idea.  Jesus set a pattern of this because he needed strength from his Father for the demands that were to be put on him each day – from performing miracles, to teaching the crowds, to opposition from the religious authorities.

A brief search of the Bible gives us many encouragements to seeking God early in the morning.

Proverbs 8:17
I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.

Isaiah 26:9
With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early.

Hosea 5:15
I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early.

Psalm 63:1
O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;

My favourite of these is Psalm 63. It has with it the idea that David is living in the desert with no water around him, but rather than feeling natural thirst, his heart instead turns to a longing for his God.  It’s as though his physical need takes second place to his need for God’s presence.

But there is one part of scripture that, for me, encapsulates the value of seeking God early in the morning.  That is from Lamentations chapter 3

This I call to mind and therefore I have hope:
Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.
They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”
The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him (Lamentations 3: 21-25)

Every morning when we wake up, the grace and the mercy of God is there waiting for us. Whatever we have done the day before can be washed away and we can receive a fresh start because our God is merciful.

His compassions they fail not. They are new every morning.
